Music Recommendation of the Month

I am generally not a fan of depressing guy indie rock. I prefer shouty girl indie rock. The closest I come to whiny guy is The Decemberists, but they're more weird than depressing. Therefore, you can take it with stronger authority when I recommend this depressing indie guy type: Tom McRae.

Every year, when The Onion puts up their top albums of the year, I try to download a few songs from them. It's a policy which has served me well, The New Pornographers and Blackalicious came from that methodology. The mini-review of Tom McCrae's album said something like "It'll grab your attention with A Day Like Today, but the rest of the album is just as good in a subtle way." So I downloaded that song and a few others, and discover myself agreeing wholeheartedly. A Day Like Today is now in my top 10 most played all-time songs, with over fifty plays in less than two months, but I've opened a spot in my heart for End of the World News, Walking to Hawaii, and even a love song - an extraordinary rarity - Mermaid Blues.

So check it out. Try not to play A Day Like Today over and over. I dare you.
