Go Team Democracy

Not to harp on the Iraqi elections or anything as being patently absurd, but, uh, they seem to be lacking in important qualities that we might consider 'democratic.'

For example: candidates! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Iraqi election is being held with any candidates proclaiming their names, because they're scared of being killed.

And without candidates, there's no campaigning. Have you heard or seen of any, you know, speeches, or pamphlets, or...well, I suppose TV ads are out of the question, huh? In some ways, that makes it a dream election. There are no questions of style over substance here. The Iraqi people get to make their decision based on nothing except...well, I'm not sure what they're basing their decisions on. But anyway, they don't have to worry about their candidates looking French. Yes, it's a dream election.*

*except for the part where anyone participating in any form has a high risk of death.
