I Am A Big Fat Nerd

This post would make more sense if I'd posted my Taxonomy of Dorks, Geeks, and Nerds. But that's a project that I haven't had time to set out yet. But basically, I consider myself a geek, and geeks are snobby. Indie rock, for example, is geeky. Fandom, on the other hand, is nerdy. And I have a nerdy past. I can usually avoid it. But the people at Movie Night seem to be doing their best to torture it out of me. Last night, I got Babylon 5 references, Absolutely Fabulous references, Dune references (I hate Dune), and so on. I managed to ignore them. Good job, Rowan. Way to front. But then, I was the only one to catch a Penny Arcade reference, and it showed. My nerdiness was then exposed, for all to see.

Being nerdy isn't the problem. I'd get into big discussions about Babylon 5, old Britcoms, They Might Be Giants, and fantasy epics, if I really really cared about these things. But I don't. I haven't liked them in years. But I used to, and all that caring is still floating around in my brain, and makes me want to jump into the conversations. "Yes, I do think that The Long Twilight Struggle is the best Babylon 5 episode. But I don't want to watch it. Ever again. Because I know I'll hate it if I do."

Must . . . maintain . . .fictional hipster cred. . .
